Aloha! My name is Monique, and I’ve called the beautiful island of Oahu my home for seven years of my life in my twenties. I continue to visit each year (sometimes multiple times)! Whether you’re an adventurer, a beach bum, or a culture enthusiast, Hawaii has something special for you. As a former local, I want to share some insider tips to help you make the most of your first trip to the Hawaiian islands.
First things first: the Hawaiian Islands are made up of eight main islands, each with its own unique charm. For first-timers, I recommend starting with Oahu. Known as “The Gathering Place,” Oahu is a perfect mix of urban excitement and natural beauty.
You’ll likely fly into Honolulu, the capital city located on Oahu. The airport is just a short drive from Waikiki, the famous beachfront neighborhood. Waikiki is a great place to stay for first-timers due to its variety of hotels, restaurants, and activities.
Waikiki Beach: Start your journey here. It’s touristy but iconic. You can take a surf lesson, relax on the beach, or walk along the bustling Kalakaua Avenue.
Diamond Head Crater: For an incredible view of Honolulu, hike up Diamond Head. It’s a relatively short hike but be prepared for a steep climb at the end.
Pearl Harbor: Visit the historic site to pay respects and learn about the events of December 7, 1941. The USS Arizona Memorial is particularly moving.
North Shore: If you’re here in the winter, the North Shore is famous for its big wave surfing. Check out Waimea Bay and the Banzai Pipeline. In the summer, the waters are calm and perfect for snorkeling.
Hanauma Bay: A nature preserve that offers some of the best snorkeling on the island. You’ll see a variety of colorful fish and possibly even a sea turtle or two.
Kualoa Ranch: Experience the beauty of the island’s interior. You can take a horseback ride, an ATV tour, or even visit movie sites from Jurassic Park.
While the popular spots are great, there are lesser-known gems that only locals frequent:
Lanikai Beach: Located in Kailua, this beach is quieter than Waikiki and boasts powdery white sand and clear turquoise waters.
Maunawili Falls: A moderate hike through lush rainforest leads you to a picturesque waterfall where you can take a refreshing dip.
Kapena Falls: A hidden gem located close to downtown Honolulu, perfect for a quick and tranquil nature escape.
Makapu’u Tide Pools: A bit of a challenging hike down from the Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail, but the crystal-clear tide pools are worth the effort.
China Walls: A local favorite spot for cliff diving and watching the sunset.
Hawaiian cuisine is a melting pot of flavors. Here are some must-try dishes and where to find them:
Poke: Fresh, marinated raw fish. Try Ono Seafood in Kapahulu or Maguro Brothers in Chinatown.
Plate Lunch: A local staple that usually includes rice, macaroni salad, and an entrée like teriyaki beef or kalua pork. Rainbow Drive-In and L&L Hawaiian Barbecue are great spots.
Malasadas: Portuguese doughnuts that are fried to perfection. Leonard’s Bakery is the go-to place.
Shave Ice: A refreshing treat, especially on a hot day. Matsumoto Shave Ice on the North Shore is famous, but Waiola Shave Ice in Honolulu is equally delicious.
Food Trucks: Especially on the North Shore, you’ll find food trucks serving up everything from garlic shrimp to acai bowls. Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck is a must-try.
Helicopter Tours: See the islands from above with a thrilling helicopter tour, offering breathtaking views of waterfalls, volcanoes, and lush landscapes.
Whale Watching: During the winter months, embark on a whale-watching tour to see humpback whales migrating through Hawaiian waters.
Surfing Lessons: Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced surfer, Hawaii offers some of the best surfing spots in the world.
Luaus: Experience a traditional Hawaiian luau, complete with hula dancing, fire shows, and a feast of local dishes.
Volcano Tours: Visit the Big Island to explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home to active volcanoes and stunning lava fields.
One of the best parts about visiting Hawaii is experiencing the “Aloha Spirit” – the genuine kindness and hospitality of the local people. Here are a few tips to help you embrace and respect the local culture:
Respect the Land: Hawaiians have a deep connection to the land, or ‘aina. Please be mindful of the environment, stay on designated trails, and don’t take anything from the beaches or parks.
Learn a Few Words of Hawaiian: Simple phrases like “Aloha” (hello/goodbye), “Mahalo” (thank you), and “E komo mai” (welcome) can go a long way in showing respect to the locals.
Be Punctual: Hawaiian time is a bit more relaxed, but for tours and reservations, it’s good to be on time.
Support Local Businesses: Whether it’s dining at local restaurants or buying souvenirs from local artisans, supporting the community is always appreciated.
Hawaii is more than just a beautiful destination; it’s a place rich in history, culture, and natural wonders. As you explore, take the time to learn about the islands and their traditions. Whether you’re hiking through lush valleys, diving into crystal-clear waters, or simply relaxing on the beach, let the Aloha Spirit guide your journey.
Mahalo for reading, and I hope your first trip to Hawaii is as magical as the islands themselves. A hui hou – until we meet again!
